Tavares Strachan’s The Encyclopedia of Invisibility, which debuted at the 57th Carnegie International, adorned the museum’s façade with 54 neon signs of names selected from the entries in a 2,400-page book of the same title created by the artist in 2018. Today, eleven of the neon names remain installed in our Sculpture Court: Wilson, Klint, Selassie, Nancy, Moondog, Malcolm, Smalls, Rosalind, Wallace, Fernald, and Lepaute. Adding to the names of great people already etched into the stone of the exterior of the museum, these new names reflect Strachan’s intensive research into what he describes as “the social amnesia of forgetting.” What are we missing and why?
