Johanna K. W. Hailman was born and lived in Pittsburgh, drawing inspiration from a range of subjects, from the flowers growing in her garden to the smoky industrial landscapes that defined her hometown. She began painting early in life, training under her father, Joseph R. Woodwell, and sharing his East End studio until his death.
.
Hailman submitted paintings to the Carnegie International almost every year, and her works were shown in an astonishing 38 separate exhibitions. She left an important legacy as an artist and patron; Hailman was a member of the Associated Artists of Pittsburgh and bequeathed her art collection to the museum.
