.
Opening May 25, this exhibition explores hazy, atmospheric depictions of industry from Monet and his contemporaries. It includes paintings and etchings of London, Paris, and Pittsburgh, capturing the power and promise of modernization in these urban centers.

Johanna K. W. Hailman, who painted this work, was born and grew up in Pittsburgh. She trained under her father, a landscape painter, and often painted the burgeoning industries of Pittsburgh as they took shape around her. In this work, she features the smokestacks of Jones and Laughlin Mill, one of the earliest steel-producing companies in Allegheny County and a major competitor of the Carnegie Steel Company.
