Once dubbed "The Holy City" due to its high concentration of churches, Wilkinsburg was an affluent neighborhood and destination for those looking to shop, dine, and worship. Since 1940, however, the town has lost nearly half its population. Many residents moved elsewhere when the steel industry collapsed in the late 1970s and early 1980s. Others have relocated over the years for a number of reasons—from the town's high tax burden, blighted properties, and struggling school district, to concerns about crime and violence. Today Wilkinsburg is a town at the crossroads of past and present, poised for reinvention. —newtonmatthew #cmoastoryboard
