In 2019, a group of women—organized under the name Moms 4 Housing—occupied a house at 2928 Magnolia Street in West Oakland. This occupation demonstrated the belief that housing is a foundational human right that makes life’s aspirations possible. They called attention to the fact that there were four times as many empty homes in Oakland as there were people without homes. Most urgently, these unhoused people include children. After months of preparation and organizing, this occupation created a home out of a long-neglected property that had been stolen from West Oakland residents by corporate housing interests. These images show the house and organizers during the occupation and today. See this story and more at OMCA for the FINAL month of Black Spaces: Reclaim & Remain!
