Any film to be screened in a Maryland theater was first subject to the Maryland State Board of Censors. This seal proved that the Censor Board had viewed and deemed a film "appropriate" for the public. Each movie received its own seal with a unique documentation number. Screening films without the board's official seal was illegal. In 1970, the board became part of the new Department of Licensing and Regulation.
You can purchase your own Maryland State Board of Censors Seal of Approval t-shirt from our Museum Store. The shirt was created by Joe Tropea, MCHC Curator of Films and Photographs and a consignor at the Museum Store, for the premiere of his 2018 documentary, “Sickies Making Films.” The documentary explores the true and often hilarious history of film censorship in America. You can shop both items using the Museum Store link in our bio.
