Brought over by immigrants from southern Germany, the tradition of the train garden has become a Baltimore staple. Initially religious in nature, Christmas gardens have changed over time to become train gardens, first incorporating wooden trains and then electric trains as technology evolved. In 1917, the first train garden appeared in a Baltimore firehouse, starting a tradition that continues through today.
