#OTD in 1920, the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution was ratified, finally granting women the right to vote after decades of aggressive campaigning. This week, the Maryland Historical Society celebrates the 100th anniversary of this monumental achievement, and the Maryland women who devoted themselves to the fight for suffrage.
This struggle is best exemplified in the Maryland Suffrage News, a weekly publication based in Baltimore, 1912-1920, now bound and held within the H. Furlong Baldwin Library. Founded and edited by Edith Houghton Hooker, the Maryland Suffrage News disseminated the pro-suffrage arguments of the Just Government League, and kept readers informed of suffrage events and campaigns. Today, it serves as an invaluable resource on the fight for #MDSuffrage.
