During quarantine, quilter Penny Clifton applied her skills in making face masks and finishing sewing projects. “Like many quilters, I spent much of my time in self-isolation making reversible cloth masks for family and friends. At least until I ran out of elastic and ribbon for ties. I went on to making self-ties… In late March and early April I ordered twill tape, ribbon, and elastic online, even though delivery dates ranged from mid-May to early-June! Gone were the days of two-day Prime shipping from Amazon. I realized in early April that our ‘new normal’ may require wearing masks for a very long time so I went into production mode. And put a backing and binding on my sister’s antique quilt, made by her husband’s grandmother (ca. 1910)…” Dr. William Rush Dunton, Jr. frequently recommended quilting as a form of occupational therapy, referencing quilting’s variety of colors, sense of community, dexterity from needlework, and designs as particularly therapeutic.
