Today, the 75th anniversary of Victory in Europe Day, also known as V-E Day, we’re sharing this
#FilmFriday clip from the Maryland Historical Society Archives showing Baltimore’s celebrations. On May 8, 1945, Allied forces accepted Nazi Germany’s surrender. The Baltimore Sun wrote that the city of Baltimore celebrated “quietly,” and with “occasional sudden scenes of jubilation,” such as those seen here.
While confetti filled the air over at the Hochschild Kohn department store and school children gathered downtown, others reflected more soberly. A taxicab driver told the newspaper that comments from many of his passengers, particularly those with relatives in the service, show that they “know the war is just half won; not over.” [“Victory Day Celebrated Quietly Here,” May 9, 1945, Baltimore Sun]
