Many families use restaurants as a place to gather for special occasions. Hutzler’s Department Store restaurants served as settings for these precious meetings for generations of Marylanders.
Share your family memories of nostalgic restaurants you entrusted for gatherings and celebrations. To help spark memories, enjoy a Hutzler’s favorite recipe:
Hutzler’s Cheese Bread
1 package (2 ¼ teaspoons) active dry yeast
¼ cup sugar
1 cup lukewarm water
2 cups milk
9 ½ cups bread flour
13 ½ ounces sharp Cheddar cheese, grated
2 teaspoons salt
2 ¼ tablespoons butter and margarine
Preheat oven to 300 degrees.
In a large bowl, dissolve yeast in water. Stir in the remaining ingredients. Knead the dough about 5 minutes and place back in bowl. Cover with a tea towel and allow it to rise until doubled, about 2 hours.
Divide the dough into 4 even parts and put in greased 4” x 8” loaf pans. Let the loaves rise again and bake 1 hour.
