Happy 137th birthday Eubie Blake! Born in Baltimore on February 7, 1887, Blake played an integral role in the Jazz Age and the Harlem Renaissance of the early 20th century.
In 1921, Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle, the self-titled “American Ambassadors of Syncopation,” premiered "Shuffle Along," one of the first Broadway musicals written, directed, and performed by African Americans. "Shuffle Along" was a smashing hit, attracting both black and white audiences and ultimately leading to the desegregation of Broadway theaters.
