The Maryland Historical Society remembers the life and extraordinary contributions of French fashion designer and icon Hubert de Givenchy, who passed away today at the age of 91. Founder of the House of Givenchy in 1952, the French couturier created many iconic looks, including Aubrey Hepburn’s little black dress for Breakfast at Tiffany’s, and dressed many famous figures, such as Wallis Simpson, the Duchess of Windsor. The Duchess of Windsor gifted one of her stunning Givenchy evening gowns, an ivory organza dress embroidered with colorful monkeys playing various instruments, to the Maryland Historical Society. The “Monkey Dress” was part of the Givenchy Haute-couture Spring/Summer Collection of 1954, and inspired by woodworks that Givenchy saw at the Hotel Rohan-Soubise in Paris. The Duchess of Windsor appeared in the dress on the cover of The Baltimore Sun Magazine in December of 1968; the original color print for that photo is also in the Maryland Historical Society collections...
