This silk ball gown was donated to the museum in 1957 with an interesting provenance- the donor was given the gown by her grandmother who claimed she received it as a gift from Mary Todd Lincoln, wife of President Abraham Lincoln. The story goes that the hostess admired the gown when the President and First Lady visited Baltimore, and that Mary Todd Lincoln had presented it as a gift. A great story, but is it true?
