#FashionFriday we look at a multigenerational gown originally worn in the 18th century! In this image our team works with Costume and Textile Specialists to understand the long history of the dress that can be discovered with close examination. While the fabric dates to and the overall style recalls the 18th century, it was altered several times. In the 1840s, the dress was made into a ball gown that opened in the back instead of the front. Decades later, the skirt was altered to accommodate a bustle and the back closure was sewn shut. In the early 20th century, new trim and lace were added to the sleeve and neckline as colonial revival came into fashion. This means that this dress was worn in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries! Now that is a well-worn dress! Xx.4.563 The Redwood Collection, Gift of Mrs. Francis Tazewell Redwood.
