#SharkWeek everyone! Did you know that historically the skin of
#sharks was used in a multitude of ways? This US Model 1850 sword used by a foot officer has a handle made of sharkskin! The untanned skin of sharks or rays, called shagreen, is very rough and granular. The roughness of the rawhide was useful to help with gripping the weapon while the granular pattern gave it an attractive appearance. Due to its striking appearance,
#shagreen would also be polished down and used for jewelry and snuff boxes.
