Across the Bay Area,
@mildredhoward transformed public monuments into sites of historical reckoning. âUntold Histories / Hidden Truthsâ features monuments of contested historical figures (Peter Burnett, William Gwin, Francis Scott Key, and Junipero Serra) covered in bright red fabric, drawing attention to their histories of violence and harm. These public figures are long commemorated despite their direct ties to slavery, racism, and systems of oppression. â
â
By veiling these monuments, Howard challenges us to reconsider who we memorialize, whose histories are celebrated, and how public art can become a space for truth-telling, justice, and historical reckoning.â
