DID YOU KNOW? The U.S. flag only had 43 stars for one year.
Idaho became the 43rd state on this date in 1890. As a result, five stars were added to the flag on July 4, 1890, signifying the addition of Idaho, Montana, North Dakota, South Dakota and Washington to the Union and bringing the number of stars to 43. Wyoming would become the 44th state just a week later on July 10, 1890, and a 44th star was added to the flag in 1891.
1891 was also the year the Idaho National Guard was formally established, though we can trace our roots back to the 1860s.
This flag, one of the few remaining 1890 flags, is stored at the Idaho Military History Museum, along with other artifacts and vehicles showcasing the state's military history.
