This 1932 M1 Wheeled Machine Gun Cart spent a long time in someone’s backyard in Mountain Home before it was purchased by the Idaho Military History Museum and restored by retired Brig. Gen. Rob Lytle.
The M1917A1 Water-Cooled Machine Gun replica was built for the cart, which can fire 600 rounds a minute and was used from 1917 all the way up until the 1970s.
The cart was designed to ease transportation of machine guns, tools and ammunition using horses during World War I. Two other versions were also made to haul additional ammo and spare guns. The cart could carry any gun in service at the time.
This cart is on display at the Idaho Military History Museum. The museum, located just outside of Gowen Field, is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday – Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
