The F-86 Saber was the Air Force’s first-swept-wing fighter jet. It made its initial flight in October 1947 and was flown by the Idaho Air National Guard from November 1953 – September 1955.
In 1948, an F-86 set a world record with a speed of 670.9 miles per hour. The Saber was the most-produced Western fighter jet with more than 9,860 variants produced. The Saber saw service in Korea, where it was extremely effective shooting down the Russian MiG-15. During the war, pilots shot down almost 800 MiGs with a kill ratio of about 8:1. The plane was versatile and adaptable and was used until the Bolivian Air Force retired its fleet in 1994.
This F-86A Saber is on display outside of the Idaho Military History Museum. The museum, located just outside of Gowen Field, is free and open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday – Friday and noon to 4 p.m. on Saturday.
