August 1st is International Beer Day! Sacramento’s brewing history began with the Galena Brewery, operated by Peter Cadel, in 1849 a block from Sutter’s Fort. Four years later, Louis Keseberg, a survivor of the Donner Party, operated the Phoenix Brewery for 8 years where the Galena once stood. Sacramento had a lot of breweries over the years. After all, Mark Twain once dubbed Sacramento the “City of Saloons.” In this video, Howard letterpress printed a beer related electrotype (copy of a woodcut). This cut, made 125-130 years ago, is from the Lewis Winter Collection. This unmounted cut depicts a brewer. This was printed with yellow oil base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #InternationalBeerDay #beer #beerday #sacramento #museum #History #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing
