The City of Sacramento formed at the confluence of the Sacramento and American Rivers after John Sutter Jr., with a lot of persuasion by Sam Brannan, paid to have the city surveyed in December 1848. Almost a year later, the widow of a former gunsmith at Sutter’s Fort, will have her property surveyed across the river establishing the City of Washington, later called Broderick, in what is now known as West Sacramento. In this video, Channey discusses Margaret McDowell, her connection to Sutter’s Fort State Historic Park, and the role she played in the development of what is now West Sacramento. #WomensHistoryMonth #suttersfort #castateparks #sacramento #westsac
