July 25th is National Thread the Needle Day! The phrase "Thread the needle" has many different meanings such as the literal meaning of taking a thread and guiding it through the eye of a sewing needle. There is also the metaphorical sense of finding a path through two opposing views or perspectives. For today, we took the literal meaning but we don’t have any sewing needles in our print shop. However, Jared letterpress printed an image from a hand-carved woodcut of something that would be very handy while sewing. This woodcut of a thimble, made in the 1890s by Lewis Winter at his wood and photo engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento, would have been used in advertising in local newspapers and periodicals. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #threadtheneedle #thimble #sewing #sacramento #museum #History #letterpress #printingpress #printing
