July 26th is National Day of the Cowboy! This Senate resolution, observed on the fourth Saturday in July, honors the culture, traditions, and values of the American cowboy and the way of life that is still alive today. For today, Howard letterpress printed a large cut that we have in our print shop at the Sacramento History Museum. The print includes a large frame with a Vaquero in the bottom left corner. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. Vaquero is a Spanish term for someone who cares for cattle. The Spanish brought cattle to California and that became a major part of the Spanish Mission Era and Mexican Rancho Period prior to the Gold Rush and U.S. statehood. Vaqueros were a diverse group of people of Spanish descent, African, and Indigenous descent. Many of the aspects of today’s rodeos can be traced to Vaqueros. • • • #NationalDayOfTheCowboy #sacramento #history #museum #letterpress #printingpress #printing #asmr ...
