April 20th is National Look Alike Day! When it comes to letterpress printing having look alikes is important such as fonts of type, border material, furniture, quions, etc. even Howard and Jared look alike wearing the same uniform in our print shop. For today, Howard letterpress printed two cuts that look alike. The reason they look the same in the print, is that one is a woodcut and the other is an electrotype of it. The electrotype process was a way of reproducing woodcuts to be used multiple times in a publication or in separate publications. For example, this is how a letterpress cut of an advertisement could be printed in two separate newspapers on the same day. These two cuts are from the Lewis Winter Collection and both were made by Lewis Winter 125-130 years ago. These would have been used for a border or be decorative in a print. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. #SacHistoryMuseum #NationalLookAlikeDay #lookalike #museum #History #s...
