On February 25, 1854, Sacramento became the Capital of California. The Sacramento County Courthouse building, constructed in 1851, at I and 7th Streets served as the Capitol building until that building was destroyed by fire on July 13, 1854, just after the legislative session ended. A new Capitol building was completed in the same location in time for the next session, however. A larger State Capitol building was completed in the 1860s at L and 10th Streets where our Capitol still is today. For today, Jared discussed California’s previous capitals and letterpress printed an electrotype (copy of a woodcut) of the State Capitol building in the 1890s. This cut is from the Lewis Winter Collection and was made 125-135 years ago. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. The Capitol grounds, just over a mile away from the Sacramento History Museum, today definitely look different than what was depicted in the print! • • • #onthisday #todayinhistory #th...
