February 17th this year is Presidents’ Day and the Sacramento History Museum is open! For today, Jared letterpress printed an image from a halftone of the first 25 presidents from George Washington to Teddy Roosevelt. Technically, Roosevelt is the 26th president but Grover Cleveland, the 22nd and 24th president, is represented once. The picture in halftones are broken into a series of equally spaced dots of varying size. Halftones were used to introduce photographs into newspapers starting in the 1880s. Firmer packing is needed in printing halftones as well. This cut was made about 115 years ago and it is from the Bill Skarles Collection. This was printed with pink rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. • • • #presidentsday #president #presidents #washington #roosevelt #halftone #art #powerofthepress #SacHistoryMuseum #sacramento #museum #history #letterpress #printingpress #asmr #printing #oldsacramento #printmaking
