On February 3, 1857, The Daily Bee published its first issue of its newspaper. The first editor of the newspaper was John Rollin Ridge until he retired from the position a week later and James McClatchy became editor. The Bee was originally located on Third Street between J and K Streets. The name “The Daily Bee” appeared in the masthead of the paper until 1890 when it was changed to “The Evening Bee.” The name “The Sacramento Bee” finally appeared at the top of the newspaper on March 6, 1908. When the Sacramento Union closed its doors in 1994, the Bee soon became the longest running newspaper in Sacramento and is still publishing today. In honor of the Bee’s 168th birthday, Jared discussed the first edition of the newspaper and letterpress printed “The Sacramento Bee” in 60 point Caslon font. This was printed with red oil base ink using our Washington hand press. • • • #onthisday #todayinhistory #sacramentobee #sacbee #newspaper #typography #powerofthepress #SacHistoryMuseum #sacra...
