On November 23, 1881, Frank Ruhstaller bought the City Brewery from William F. Borchers. The City Brewery, founded in 1855, was located at the corner of 12th and H Streets in Sacramento. This was the first brewery Ruhstaller worked at when he initially came to Sacramento in 1865, but he left in 1866 and worked at a variety of other breweries in the city, including the Pacific and Sutterville Breweries. When Ruhstaller acquired the City Brewery, it only had a capacity to produce 15 barrels of beer a day. He quickly increased production capacity to 65 barrels per day. Ruhstaller later introduced the Gilt Edge Steam Beer, which became the brewery’s flagship lager beer and arguably the most popular beer in Sacramento at the time. By the end of the decade, Ruhstaller was an investor in the growing Buffalo Brewing Company.
