On November 18, 1883, at 12:00pm, railroad companies in North America adopted Standard Railway Time, a new time system implemented for railroad operations. American cities quickly followed suit and enacted ordinances to follow the railroads. The time system split the continent into four time zones (Pacific, Mountain, Central, and Eastern). Before this implementation, the time of day was localized and used some form of solar time. Railroad companies needed a way to have accurate times for operations and shipping goods on busy rail lines. For today, Howard letterpress printed a photo engraving of an old locomotive. This cut comes from our miscellaneous collection in our print shop. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. • • • #onthisday #todayinhistory #thisdayinhistory #timezone #railroad #train #locomotive #railroads #trains #museum #history #sacramento #letterpress #printingpress #SacHistoryMuseum #asmr #printing #oldsac...
