November 1st is National Brush Day! This day is observed annually on the day after Halloween to promote oral hygiene and good teeth brushing habits. For today, Jared letterpress printed a hand carved woodcut, made about 130 years ago, from the Lewis Winter Collection of something that was hard to find in Sacramento in the 1850s. Bathhouses, like the Eureka Baths on Second Street between I and J Streets, in the 1850s changed the bath water after every 10 bathers and had communal toothbrush available for its customers. The text below the print of a toothbrush states, “Brush Your Teeth!” and was typeset in 30 point Caslon font. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. • • • #NationalBrushDay #SacHistoryMuseum #woodcut #toothbrush #brushyourteeth #museum #history #sacramento #printingpress #letterpress #printing #printmaking #oldsac #oldsacramento
