We often observe many national “holidays” on social media. It is one of the ways we can highlight and give relevance to an item in our museum, especially our print shop exhibit. For example, October 18th is National Necktie Day! What we know as a necktie today has its origins in Croatia dating to the mid-1600s. For today, Howard letterpress printed two hand carved woodcuts from the Lewis Winter Collection, which were made roughly 130 years ago. These woodcuts depict two different styles of neckties. Much of Winter’s Collection contains clothing items that were used in advertising in the 1890s in local Sacramento newspapers. Since these were originally made for publication work like in a newspaper, these have likely only been printed in black ink until this video. These were printed with pink rubber base ink using our Washington hand press, which was made in 1852. • • • #NationalNecktieDay #necktie #woodcut #pink #ink #museum #history #sacramento #asmr #printingpress #letterpress #...
