Happy birthday, KCRA 3! On September 3, 1955, KCRA went on the air for the first time at 2pm with a telecast at the California State Fair and continues to broadcast to this day. The news studio was originally housed in a remodeled old dairy barn located at 310 10th Street. At the time, its news antenna was the tallest structure in Sacramento and there were 57,000 television receivers in the Sacramento area.
The Center for Sacramento History houses the KCRA Film Collection, which is the largest local news film collection in the United States! The collection spans from 1955 to 1982, when the station switched to video tape.
For today, Jared letterpress printed “KCRA” using 18 line Latin wood type from the Bill Gaylord Collection. This type is not in the best condition, hence the battered marks in the print. This was printed with black rubber base ink using our Washington hand press.
