On August 12, 1851, Isaac Singer patented a machine for commercial use that would revolutionize the textile industry during the latter part of the Market Revolution. This machine was first invented in 1790 by Thomas Saint. It is Isaac Singer’s patents though that made the machines more accessible. Of course, that machine was the sewing machine! By 1852, tailors and sewing businesses in Sacramento had sewing machines in their shops, which greatly increased production over sewing by hand. For today, Jared letterpress printed an image from a hand-carved woodcut of something that you would need for your sewing machine in the late 1800s, which is a bottle of sewing machine oil. This woodcut, made in the 1890s by Lewis Winter at his engraving business at 627 J Street in Sacramento, would have been used in advertising in local newspapers and magazines. This was printed with rhodamine red rubber base ink using our Washington hand press. • • • #OnThisDay #TodayInHistory #thisdayinhistory #...
