April 20, 1966
On this day in 1966, Old Sacramento was dedicated as a State Historical Landmark. Bounded by the Sacramento River to the west, the Interstate 5 freeway to the east, Capitol Mall to the south, and the I Street Bridge to the north, Old Sacramento is one of the largest historic districts on the National Register for Historic Places west of the Mississippi River.
Originally part of the West End of Downtown Sacramento, the city began along the waterfront in 1849. However, by the 1960s, much of the area and buildings had fallen into disrepair.
In an effort to save one of the oldest parts of the city from redevelopment and the construction of the Interstate 5 freeway, a 28 acre portion was saved in 1966. Old Sacramento is comprised today of restaurants, shops, attractions, and museums, housed in restored and reconstructed buildings of the mid to late 1800s.
