Today is César Chávez Day, a day celebrated to honor the birth & legacy of the civil rights figure. Chávez was born on this day in 1927 and founded the United Farm Workers in August 1966 with Dolores Huerta.
The United Farm Workers have fought for labor and civil rights for Mexican-American and Filipino farm workers, especially those working on grape farms. The United Farm Workers continues to this day to fight for protections and labor rights of California farm workers.
On March 17, 1966, Chávez began a 340-mile march from Delano, CA to the State Capitol in Sacramento with 75 Mexican and Filipino farm workers to bring awareness of working conditions and wages. The march also intended to place pressure on grape growers and state lawmakers to answer the demands of the Mexican and Filipino farm workers. Twenty-five days later on April 10, Easter Sunday, Chavez arrived at the State Capitol with 10,000 supporters.
