November 3rd is National Cliché Day! While a cliché often refers to an overused phrase, clichés also refer to in letterpress printing as electrotypes. Clichés are copies of woodcuts and halftones. In this video, Jared discusses how clichés, also known as electrotypes, are made. The electrotype process was a way of reproducing woodcuts to be used multiple times in a publication or in separate publications. For example, this is how a letterpress cut of an advertisement could be printed in two separate newspapers on the same day. What Jared prints for this video is 3 woodcuts and clichés of those woodcuts from the Lewis Winter Collection. All 6 cuts were made 125-130 years ago. #SacHistoryMuseum #cliché #museum #letterpress #printing #learnontiktok #EduTok #printingpress
