On September 24, 1774, John Chapman was born in Massachusetts. He was a nurseryman who planted a certain fruit tree across the Midwest. He is known by a different name in history because of the myth that was planted after he passed away. The first major appearance of “Johnny Appleseed” was in a story by W.D. Haley in Harper’s Monthly in 1871. It is true that Johnny Appleseed is based off of the life of John Chapman who really did plant apple trees anywhere he could. In honor of Johnny Appleseed Day, Jared printed two electrotypes, made about 90 years ago, from the Bill Gaylord Collection. #SacHistoryMuseum #onthisday #johnnyappleseed #apple #apples #museum #printingpress #letterpress #sacramento
