When I was 18 I failed out of my first semester of college. Yes, there were some reasons that would offer explanation - I was roofied and ended up on crutches with a broken ankle, and pretty much lost all motivation to go back to class. But my "default" at the time was to quit on myself, so that's what I did yet again.
Luckily after returning home my parents immediately made me enroll in community college. I felt like a failure in a lot of ways, and even though people always told me I was smart I really started to doubt it. After finishing my general education credits I transferred to study fashion retail management and helped my sister open her store talltique. I ended up graduating with almost perfect grades, taking 6 classes my last semester to graduate early.
While I did need that boost to remind me what I was capable of, the most important part was finishing what I started - which was the first major step in learning how to believe in myself.
