Today is the feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe! In 1531, the Virgin Mary appeared to an Aztec convert and widower, St. Juan Diego. He encountered her on Tepeyac Hill outside Mexico City. Spanning several apparitions, Mary identified herself and eventually placed rare Castillian roses in Juan Diego’s tilma (traditional garb) for him to take back to the bishop as a sign that she wanted a church built on the spot. But when he arrived, everyone’s attention was on the miraculous image imprinted on the tilma, an image of our Mother Mary that has since become known as “Our Lady of Guadalupe.” When the native people heard that the Mother of God had appeared to one of them, they responded with deep love and innumerable conversions.
