St. Thomas’ family was not happy about his desire to join the Dominicans — so much so that they locked him in a tower (they still fed him). Famously, two of St. Thomas’ brothers hired a prostitute to seduce Thomas, a ploy they hoped would discourage him from becoming a friar. In this podcast clip, Fr. Thomas Joseph White tells us what happened next. Besides allowing St. Thomas ample time to study scripture (it seems he basically memorized the Bible), Thomas’ imprisonment also meant he had time to teach his younger sister theology. She subsequently ran away from home and became a Benedictine sister, later an Abbess. At this point, Fr. White tells us, St. Thomas’ family “became very discouraged.” This lecture is part of the first lesson for Aquinas 101. You can find the complete talk with much more of the life and sanctity of Thomas Aquinas through the Aquinas 101 podcast or the Thomistic Institute’s main podcast.
