Unattended cooking is the leading cause of cooking fires and casualties. Recently, our Fire Inspector followed up on a grease fire caused by unattended cooking. At the time of the fire, the grandmother was cooking when one of three children began to cry. She left the stove unattended to tend to the child meanwhile the grease reached a temperature hot enough to set off the sprinkler system. The front door, entrance and exit, to their 2nd floor middle-unit apartment is located next to the kitchen. Without a working sprinkler system to put out the fire the family could have possibly been trapped by the fire. "Chalk another win up for residential sprinkler systems saves," said Fire Inspector Dale Kepler. When moving into an apartment or condo, potential renters should look to see if there are fire sprinkler systems in place and make sure all smoke alarms work. Most importantly, no matter where you live don't leave your stove/oven unattended when cooking. #firepreventionmonth
