Today in the #ArtofRhyme, we looked at Childish Gambino's "This is America" - I asked students for their interpretation of the video. They picked up on things like how the guns are handled more carefully than lives, how his dancing and rapping is a metaphor for the distractions from real issues going on in the background, and how he may have been acting as Jim Crow. We talked about Africa and how Africans possessed superior skills in math, science, and technology before European colonization yet are portrayed as being impoverished and ignorant. We talked about how this narrative has been falsely perpetuated overtime to uphold a system of international white supremacy and how we must reject that! I brought in Nas' "I Can" which summarizes/speaks on a lot of this. I'm so proud of these students; they are so brilliant and very much aware of what's going on around them. They're going to make a better future for us all.
