Clark County is introducing a new drone to combat the unusually high mosquito activity in the Las Vegas valley this monsoon season.
The drone, named RC-1 in honor of Rusty Carlson*, sprays pesticide over large areas of standing water, flood channels, and detention basins.
This drone, which can carry up to 50 pounds of pesticide and fly for about 30 minutes, significantly reduces the manpower and time required for mosquito control.
The pesticide targets mosquito larvae and black flies without affecting humans or pets.
The new drone complements existing efforts, including an underwater drone used in the Colorado River. Clark County encourages the public to eliminate standing water on their properties to help reduce mosquito populations.
*Rusty Carlson was the founder of Clark County’s Aquatic Insect Suppression Program and a mentor in mosquito control efforts.
