Today, April 22, construction starts on a new $12 billion train line that will connect Southern California and Las Vegas.
The project, called Brightline West, will put down 218 miles of tracks from Blue Diamond Road (between I-15 and Las Vegas Boulevard) to Rancho Cucamonga. This new train route will reduce the travel time from over three hours by car to just over two hours by train.
The route will mostly follow the middle of Interstate 15 and will have a stop in Victorville. It's expected to carry about 11 million people each year. The trains will have bathrooms, Wi-Fi, and food service, and you'll be able to check bags.
The project is backed by $6.5 billion from the federal government and includes grants and permission to sell bonds that don't have tax.
It should be finished by the time Los Angeles hosts the 2028 Summer Olympics. The construction will create many jobs and is seen as a big boost for the local economy.
