Know #HerStory! When Wilma Rudolph was a child, she contracted polio and lost strength in her left leg. She wore a leg brace until she was twelve years old. But that didn't stop her. With years of physical therapy, she started running track in high school where she was recruited by the Tennessee State University Tigerbelles.
At 16, she joined her fellow Tigerbelles in the 1956 Olympics, where they won a bronze medal in the 4x100 relay race. She returned to the Olympics four years later to win three gold medals, the first American woman to do so!
