Arthur Ashe was a tennis legend, becoming the first and only Black man to have won Wimbledon in July 1975 when he defeated Jimmy Connors in four sets.
But it was his work away from the court that cemented his legacy as one of the greatest philanthropists of all time.
Toward the end of his life, Ashe advocated for marginalized communities, including Black communities affected by apartheid in South Africa and those suffering from AIDS. In doing so, he inspired a generation of athlete activists -- including Colin Kaepernick, Serena Williams, LeBron James and Naomi Osaka -- to follow in his footsteps.
The new CNN Film “Citizen Ashe” explores Ashe’s enduring legacy. It airs Sunday, June 26, at 9 p.m. ET/PT.
