In 2018, Afghanistan has the highest number of polio cases in the world, and is one of just three countries that has never stopped transmission of polio. Afia's job is to educate families about polio and to encourage vaccination. Female polio workers are critical because only women are allowed into a family's home to check that every infant has been vaccinated.
“If I wasn’t eradicating polio, my parents would force me to give up my education and get married,” says Afia, a vaccinator from southern Afghanistan. “I am not just saving children's lives - I am saving mine.” While most women are confined to their homes, Afia travels fearlessly throughout her community delivering polio vaccines. Her motivation? “I believe that no child should be paralyzed by polio.” This photo is part of gavialliance photo exhibition “Vaccine Heroes” currently ongoing in Geneva, Switzerland, to celebrate health care workers who work every day to build brighter futures for children.
