It’s #NationalCatfishDay! Meet the Mexican blind catfish!
This endangered fish is found only in an aquifer shared between Texas and Mexico. Our team at the Center for Conservation and Research at San Antonio Zoo is working to learn about this species and its habitat. In 2016, team members documented a population in Val Verde County, Texas, the first confirmed occurrence of this species in the United States!
You might ask yourself, “What’s so important about a blind catfish?” One answer is water quality indication!
Since these catfish live in a drinking water source for many people, we are in big trouble if they go extinct! If their habitat is too toxic for them to live in, it also means the drinking water is becoming dangerously contaminated.
