🚀 Why do hypersonic vehicles have blunt noses?
At hypersonic speeds (Mach 5+), the biggest threat isn’t friction — it’s shock heating.
A sharp nose forces air to compress right on the surface, creating extreme temperatures that can melt materials.
A blunt nose pushes the shockwave away from the vehicle, forming a cushion of super-hot air in front of it.
That gap reduces how much heat actually reaches the structure.
Counterintuitive, but true:
🔺 Sharper = hotter
🔵 Blunter = cooler
This is why capsules like Apollo, Orion, and many hypersonic test vehicles look more like flying bricks than darts.
Physics beats aesthetics every time.
